What does 'Gníomhach le Gaeilge' mean?
'Gníomhach le Gaeilge' means Active with Irish.
Is the camp all about Irish?
While the camp operates through Irish, we have found that this does not impact the pupils at all! Quite the opposite-they are so active, and involved in making new friends that they quickly forget!
My son/daughter does not have a great standard of Irish. Will it be too difficult?
We cater for ALL standards of Irish, and our staff are very experienced in encouraging even the most reluctant of language learners.
My child is attending alone. Will this be too tough for her/him?
The vast majority of our students attend alone. After an initial 10 minutes of apprehension, new friends are made, as it is a very interactive camp. There is a lot of group/pair work in all activities.
How do I book my child in?
Click on the Booking Form buttons on the Booking Page.
No deposit is required-full payment on the first day.
Are the classes similar to school?
The morning classes are conversation-based, similar to a course in the Gaeltacht. They cover topics applicable to the student themselves- family/area/interests etc. The topics are taught and reinforced using interaction and activity-worksheets/pair-work/ group work/ chat. We focus on speaking, rather than writing, although brief notes are taken, and worksheets provided. The classes are conducted in a circle, and are fully based on communication.
My child is exempt from Irish, but likes it. Can he/she go?
As long as a student is willing to engage, and is positive, we are happy to welcome them on our camps. We have had a number of students in the past who have been exempt, but may have enjoyed listening in on Irish classes in school. They generally enjoy the camps a lot!
My child is very reluctant to attend, but I have heard great things about the camp and would really like him to give it a go.
Our advice is to ask them to do one day-if they don't like it, you will collect them and not mention it again! Many parents have done this is in the past. The child feels comforted by the fact that they must only attend for a few hours-and of course they make friends and have fun, and don't wish to leave!
We have had many, many reluctant students arrive on day 1, but we have never had a student leave!!
My son/daughter is not sporty/into music/ academic. Will they be forced to participate.
With the Summer and Easter Camps, they are just that-camps. Fun is central to all that we do, and no child will be forced in any way to participate in an activity. Our sport/muisc/drama/zumba/quiz/céilí elements are meant to create the context where language learning and use are done while the students is active and having fun. We are not a sports camp, a music camp, a school etc. If a student wishes to sit something out, that is absolutely fine- but we find that they don't!
